I’ll admit it: I never gave ski bindings much thought. Put a binding with a release-value range up to 13 or higher on my skis, and away I went.
That changed last season when I mounted a pair of the new Marker Griffon X 13 bindings on a Völkl Mantra 7. The difference was immediately noticeable. The skis felt quicker and more powerful, yet somehow easier to ski.
That experience led me to take a closer look at two often-overlooked binding characteristics: stance height and ramp angle.
What Is Ski Binding Stance Height?
Stance height, also called stand height or stack height, is the vertical distance between the top of the ski and the bottom of the ski boot sole.
Because the toe and heel pieces may position the boot at different heights, it is useful to consider both measurements.
A lower stance height places the skier closer to the ski and the snow. Depending on the ski, boot and skier, this can create:
- More direct power transmission
- Better terrain and snow feedback
- A lower center of gravity
- A more connected feel between the boot and ski
- Quicker, more precise responses
However, lower is not automatically better for every skier. Some skiers may prefer the additional leverage provided by a taller binding, particularly on narrower skis or firm snow.
What Is Binding Ramp Angle?
Ramp angle, often called binding delta, is determined by the difference between the heel and toe heights.
For example, a binding with a 9 mm toe height and a 14 mm heel height has a 5 mm ramp delta. The raised heel can create a more forward-biased stance.
A binding’s overall stance height and its ramp delta are related, but they are not the same thing. A binding can sit very low on the ski while still having a noticeable difference between the heel and toe heights.
The way that delta feels also depends on several other factors, including:
- Boot-sole length
- The boot’s internal ramp angle
- Forward lean
- Ski mounting position
- The skier’s anatomy and technique
Marker’s Game-Changer: The X-Series
Marker redesigned its freeski lineup with the X-Series, which includes the Griffon X 13, Griffon X 13 MWerks and Jester X 16 MWerks.
The design fully integrates the X-Brake into the heel plate and uses a compact, single-piece Triple Pivot Elite X toe. This reduces the stance height to:
- Toe height: 9 mm
- Heel height: 14 mm
- Ramp delta: 5 mm
According to Marker, the X-Series sits nearly 40% lower than the average freeski binding. The result is an exceptionally low-profile platform designed to provide direct power transmission, precise control and greater feedback from the ski.

What Makes the Marker X-Series Different?
Lower Stance Height
At 9 mm under the toe and 14 mm under the heel, the X-Series brings the skier unusually close to the ski. This is designed to improve snow feedback and create more direct power transmission.
Compact Mounting Footprint
The redesigned heel has a shorter, more compact construction. Reducing the amount of binding material extending behind the mounting screws may allow the ski to flex more naturally.
Integrated X-Brake
Integrating the brake into the heel plate helps Marker achieve the 14 mm heel height. Because brake selection is part of this integrated design, choosing the correct width at the time of purchase is especially important.
MWerks Construction
The MWerks models use selected lightweight, rigid materials, including magnesium components, to balance strength, precision and weight.
Alpine and GripWalk Compatibility
The X-Series is designed for compatible Alpine ISO 5355 and GripWalk ISO 23223 boot soles. It does not offer the broader touring-sole compatibility found in some Multi-Norm bindings.
What Does This Mean on Snow?
The Marker X-Series establishes a new benchmark for low-profile freeski bindings. Its 9 mm toe and 14 mm heel place the boot noticeably closer to the ski than bindings such as the classic Marker Griffon, Look Pivot and Salomon Strive.
For skiers who want maximum precision, direct power transfer and snow feedback, that lower platform may make a meaningful difference.
The 5 mm ramp delta is equally important. Skiers who prefer a flatter stance, or who feel that their skis react too quickly in bumps, chopped snow or other unpredictable conditions, may prefer less delta. Others may appreciate the forward-biased position and direct response of the Marker X-Series, particularly in bumps, freeride terrain or more aggressive skiing.
There is no universally ideal stance height or ramp angle. The best combination depends on the skier, boot, ski and intended terrain. That is why binding selection should consider more than DIN range and brake width.
With brake widths beginning at 90 mm, the Marker X-Series is particularly relevant to modern all-mountain, freeride and freestyle skis. The correct brake width, binding model and release settings should always be selected, mounted and tested by a qualified ski technician.
